Candied Yams and Sweet Potatoes

My family had a late Thanksgiving dinner this year and we decided to have a family potluck to celebrate. I wanted to stay traditional and make a candied yam dish. Instead of just yams, I wanted to add a bit more colour to the dish so I included some sweet potatoes as well.

Start by peeling your sweet potatoes and yams. Then cut the sweet potatoes and yams in 1 cm slices. In a baking tray, layer your sweet potato and yams in an alternating pattern. Set aside.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Celsius. While your oven is heating up, cut 1/4 cup butter into cubes. (I didn’t measure the butter and just cut enough to add chunks all over your dish. Too much butter doesn’t hurt… right??)

Add the butter to the dish and then sprinkle with a generous amount of cinnamon.

Next add a generous amount of brown sugar. If you like your dish sweet, add more!! (Do you see a trend?)

I add a tablespoon of water to help steam the sweet potatoes and yams. Loosely cover the entire dish with aluminum foil and place in the oven. Bake for 40 minutes or until the sweet potatoes and yams are soft.

The final touch is to add some mini marshmallows to the top!!  Take the dish out and sprinkle a cup of marshmallows all over. Place it back in the over for another 5-10 minutes or until the marshmallows are nice and toasted.

*Warning!!! I definitely forgot about the marshmallows and they ended up swelling and touching the top rack in the oven. Keep an eye on them!*

Once toasted, the dish is ready to serve! Enjoy and be thankful 🙂
