How to Make Homemade Yogurt!

Making yogurt sounds like a big ordeal but its very easy to do! Yogurt has beneficial bacteria that helps create the nice tart flavour. I’ve only tried making yogurt a couple of times and I’m still experimenting on the time of maturation and type of milk. So far both my batches resulted in runny yogurt.

Yogurt requires live bacteria so it is necessary to use a yogurt starter. Store bought plain yogurt works well for this. Once you make your first batch, you can save a bit to use for the next batch.

Heat whole milk (the more fat, the thicker the yogurt) over medium low heat. You don’t want to over boil the milk. Heat it just enough to have some foam at the edge. The milk should be heated to about 115 degrees.  My yogurt maker came with a thermometer with an indicator so that made it really easy.

Once the milk reaches the proper temperature, take 1-2 tablespoons of yogurt and mix a couple of tablespoons of warm milk into it. Stir until there are no lumps. Pour this into the rest of the milk.

Pour the yogurt mixture into the yogurt maker and set it to 15-20 hours. The longer you leave it, the thicker and more tart it becomes. Experiment to see what works for your tastes. I find that I like my yogurt when it has been left a lot longer.

Once you are done, you can add jam and fresh fruit to make different flavoured yogurt. It is a great way to save a few bucks and also make fresh yogurt!!
