Rice Krispies Nests

on

I love trying to make easy bake recipes for kids. Now that it’s close to Easter, you can get mini eggs in any grocery store. Using the classic Rice Krispies marshmallow square recipe and some creative decorating, we were able to make a sweet treat.

I started by getting the kids to grease the cupcake trays. I put some olive oil in a bowl and got them to coat the trays with paper towels dipped in oil.

Next it was time to make the Rice Krispies. This was a good opportunity for the kids to learn to measure. We needed 2 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and 2 cups of mini marshmallows. I learned quickly that you will never finish measuring marshmallows without having the kids taste test the ingredients. Quality control is what we call it.

The next part is for the adults. The kids got to take a break. Add 1/4 cup of butter into a large pot, add 1 tbsp of vanilla extract. Let the butter melt. Turn the heat down to medium and add the mini marshmallows. Once the marshmallows are melted, turn off the heat and pour in the Rice Krispies.

This part is where you have to work fast. Get a greased spoon and a bowl of oil. Portion out the Rice Krispies into the cupcake tray. Coat your hand in oil and put a small dent into the center. These will be the nests.

The fun part begins next! The kids now get to decorate each nest. I gave them mini eggs and sprinkles. Of course there needs to be some taste testing as well.

I saved some Rice Krispies and larger squares. I decorated these with some eggs and sprinkles.

Let the Rice Krispies cool completely before removing them from the cupcake tray. Enjoy!
