The Dark Table – A Different Experience

A while back I wanted to try a new dining experience. I heard about a place called Dark Table where you eat in the dark. You would lose you sense of sight and experience meals with your other senses.

When we arrived at the restaurant, we all waited outside and a waiter came out to greet us. The neat thing was a majority of the staff was visually impaired. The waiter gave us a brief description of what to expect (ie. complete darkness, how navigate the room, how the dishes will be served, no flash photography etc). We were told to put our hand on the shoulders of the person in front of us and make a human chain as we were directed to our table.

The atmosphere was eerie and dark. You could hear surrounding guests as they talked to each other while eating. I snuck a picture as we finally got to our table.

The meal was a set menu and when you booked you would indicate what you wanted. We sat at our table waiting for the food. We could hear the servers as they walked around. I don’t know how they managed because I would have bumped into everything. Our table played a game, we tried to guess the lay out of the room. How many tables? Number of guests?

Our first dish came out. It was beautifully displayed and set up in a way that it highlighted certain ingredients.

Gingerly, we would poke at our foods with our fingers to see where it was and then making a mental note, we used our forks to lift it in our mouths. There were many sensations that I didn’t realize when you don’t use you eyes. The smell, taste and texture was enhanced and of course, you did not have to worry about messiness because no one saw you.

Other dishes came out and they were equally as interesting.

Some food items came in cubes, other in sauces and purees. Finally the dessert came. It was the most spectacular thing I have seen.

Overall, I had a good time. The servers were amazing. The food was interesting. I enjoyed my company. This is an experience to try!!
